Boot Smarts 2

Lately I have seen a lot of boot toppers in magazines and catalogues, and even my Instagram feed had a couple of crochet versions to show. Of course, many of you already knit your own woolly socks to keep your tootsies toasty. However, who can be bothered to knit extra long over the knee socks to be able to fold them over the top of boots to keep calves warm too.

Thats when boot toppers come in very handy. They are super quick to make, one evening should do the trick. Before you know it you have made a stylish accessory that keeps your legs warm too.

Here is my version for you to make your very own pair:

You need:

Approx. 180m Aran Yarn (I used Debbie Bliss Fez – colour shade 20/Stone)

Set of 5 Double pointed knitting needles 4.5mm

Cable Needle

Stitch Marker

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 10cm square using stocking stitch and 4.5mm needles

Finished Measurements: (h) 22cm – Circumference 28cm

Special Notes:

C4B – slip 2 sts onto cable needle and  hold at back of work, knit next 2 sts and then 2 sts from cable needle

C4F – slip 2 sts onto cable needles and hold at front of work, knit next 2 sts and then 2 sts from cable needle

The Pattern: (make two the same)

Using double pointed needles cast on 78 sts. Dividing stitches onto 4 needles join for knitting in the round, making sure not to twist the stitches.

Work 3 rounds in K1, P1 rib

Continue as follows:

Rnd 1: *P2, K4; rep. from * around

Rnd 2: *P2, C4F; rep. from * around

Rnds 3-6: as rnd 1

Rnd 7: *P2, C4B; rep. from * around

Rnds 8-10: as rnd 1

Repeat rounds 1-10 once more and then rounds 1-5 once more.

Turn work inside out and purl 2 rounds.

Continue working K1, P1 rib until piece measures 22 cm from cast on edge.

Cast off in rib. Weave in all ends.

You are done!

  • Oh, Heike, like I commented on Instagram, these are gorgeous and I would really, really like to make them. However, I must finish my first pair of knitted socks first (and then find some more courage) before even thinking about knitting these wonderful boot toppers of yours. I did just pin them to my knitting board ….. Love, Marianne xx
